#BooleanExpected in Checkbox Row where I need to get a count

My Current formula is

=COUNTIF(Screened20:Screened28, true)

I'm just trying to use this to display the sum of boxes that are checked in the section below the count, but the column is expecting a check and therefore won't report that number. Is there a way to have the row report the number even though the column is expecting a checkbox?
