Conditional Column-wide formulas

Is there any way to apply a formula to a column so that it applies to any new entry, but only if the entry meets a specified criteria, otherwise it leaves it and the user can edit the cell. Specifically, I am looking to apply a formula to only the first ancestors in a column.

Unfortunately, combining Column Formula and manual input is impossible now, but it's an excellent idea!
