how can i copy a value from one cell to another in the same sheet

I have the above project plan setup
The FOCUS AREA is a dropdown value.
When i add children to a parent, i want the children to inherit the parents FOCUS AREA value.
i created a helper column to identify children and that childs parent value for focus area. How can i automate the copy over AND still allow the user to pick a value for the drop-down (for parent rows)?
When i put a formula in the FOCUS AREA column it over-rides the users ability to select a value. They still to do this for parent entries.
Any ideas?

You would use
=PARENT([Focus Area]@row)

@Paul Newcome Yeah hit on the same formula and had to copy it from row to row rather than making it a column formula. The latter prevents me from picking from the drop-down as an option. Thank you.
