Lock in a date once once a criteria has been reached

I am trying to work on a formula where once a status has changed to "Completed" then it will give the capture of the date in a completed date cell. But when the next year rolls around the status will change to Pending, but I need the capture date to stay as is until it reaches Completed again....not sure if that make sense or not :-)

@Cathy Fraser a record date automation should do the trick with the criteria being with the status changes to completed.

I think I may have found it, but this would work great for a new sheet, but I already have dates that I need to lock in as the sheet has been up and running for about 18 months....

Do you have the information in the current sheet(s) of when somebody completed it? You can look in the Activity Log or right-click each cell and check the Cell History.
