Column freezing via API

Is it possible to set certain columns as 'frozen' via the API, or Python SDK? Having trouble finding any documentation on this.

This is going to be used for many API generated 'schedule' type tables, and would be very nice to set without going through each sheet's UI.

No, the Smartsheet API does not currently have the ability to Freeze columns; this would need to be done through the UI, as you've found.
