ISBLANK formula (as part of a much larger formula) not working

Hi,

I am populating a column with the abbreviation for the month that corresponds to when a task was completed. There are many tasks on the sheet that have not yet been completed, so there is no date/month. My formula is returning "INVALID DATA TYPE" in the "Month Completed" for those cells in the row where the date is blank. I believe these instances for #INVALID DATA TYPE are keeping my Pivot from working. So, I am trying to use the ISBLANK formula to keep the cell in the month column blank when the Actual Completion Date is blank. I've tried a few different variations of the formula, but , so far, none of them have worked. My latest attempt is highlighted in the snapshot below.

Any ideas what I might be doing wrong?

Try something like this. (add the bolded part to the start of the formula)

=IF([Actual Completion Date]@row = "", "", IF(MONTH([Actual Completion Date]@row) = 1, "JAN"

@Andrée Starå, that DEFININTELY helped me move into a different approach that, ultimately, resulted in a working formula. Here's what ended up working:

=IF(ISBLANK([Actual Completion Date]@row), "", IF(MONTH([Actual Completion Date]@row) = 1, "01-JAN", IF(MONTH([Actual Completion Date]@row) = 2, "02-FEB", IF(MONTH([Actual Completion Date]@row) = 3, "03-MAR", IF(MONTH([Actual Completion Date]@row) = 4, "04-APR", IF(MONTH([Actual Completion Date]@row) = 5, "05-MAY", IF(MONTH([Actual Completion Date]@row) = 6, "06-JUN", IF(MONTH([Actual Completion Date]@row) = 7, "07-JUL", IF(MONTH([Actual Completion Date]@row) = 8, "08-AUG", IF(MONTH([Actual Completion Date]@row) = 9, "09-SEP", IF(MONTH([Actual Completion Date]@row) = 10, "10-OCT", IF(MONTH([Actual Completion Date]@row) = 11, "11-NOV", IF(MONTH([Actual Completion Date]@row) = 12, "12-DEC")))))))))))))
