Request an Approval: Customize Status & Buttons: Meaning of "When Submitted"
Can someone explain what this option means? As I understand there can only be two buttons "approve" and "decline" so when would it ever automatically put "submitted"?

It's automatically changed to the Submitted status when the Approval is triggered and awaiting Approval/Decline.

@Andrée Starå Thank you. That clarifies it! Oddly enough this means you won't necessarily see "submitted" even if a form involved in the workflow has been submitted, as the request for approval won't necessarily be triggered due to that form submission.

Yes, that is correct. I think of it as it's only for the Approval Process, but you could add another status column and then combine it if that would help.
