Not sure to understand correctly your requirement but let suppose you have Column1 to Column5 . If you want to get the value of Column5 into Column1, simply enter this formula in Column1"=[Column5]@row". Tell me if this is what you expected.

There will not always be a number. There are project numbers, but there are letters in it. It will always go from left to right, but it will be in empty cells in between.
Ok. I am going to suggest a "helper row" in my example I will use row 1. In this row you will enter the numbers starting at 1 from left to right across the columns you want to pull from.
Then you could use a formula such as...
=INDEX([First Column]@row:[Last Column]@row, 1, MAX(COLLECT([First Column]$1:[Last Column]$1, [First Column]@row:[Last Column]@row, @cell <> "")))
