Remove Empty Space at Bottom of Dashboard

I have just redesigned a dashboard that my organization used and got rid of a lot of unused real estate on the page, but now have a lot of empty space at the bottom of the dashboard (see image below).

How can I remove this empty space?

  • Hi @Sunil.Mukerjee,

If you go into edit mode on the dashboard and right click in the whitespace, there is an option to Consolidate Empty Space. Sometimes when you do this it moves some of your widgets around, but I find it generally helps with this problem.

    Hope this helps 😊

    Hi @Sunil.Mukerjee

I hope you're well and safe!

There's an option to consolidate empty space if you right-click on the empty space when you're in edit mode.

    Did that work/help?

    I hope that helps!

Be safe, and have a fantastic week!

  • Hi Matthew and Andrée,

Thank you both so much for your quick reply! At first when I tried the Consolidate Empty Space option it did not seem to work. Then what I did was make a copy of my dashboard, and this no longer had the empty space at the bottom. I then went back to my original dashboard and that was also fixed. Weird, but it worked!

    Thanks again for your help!

I had the same question, and Consolidate Empty Space does not remove the empty space at the bottom. But I did what Sunil suggested and that worked for me too - thanks for this, Sunil! I don't like to have extra blank pages in the pdf version, so this fixed it. It would be nice if Smartsheet could add the consolidation of empty space at the bottom of the dashboard to that feature also.

  • I'm glad that did the trick!

I just tried the copy trick again for another dashboard, and it didn't work to remove the empty pdf pages this time. 😕

  • Consolidate empty space doesn't seem to be working to remove unused grid at the bottom of my dashboards. Copying the also doesn't work. Thoughts on how to solve this?

@JThorne , it doesn't work to remove the space at the bottom of the dashboard, only in between the widgets. The only way I've seen to do it, if you're trying to have it saved as a pdf, is to print to pdf only the pages with content. What I don't like about this option is that is still shows the total number of pages and that you only printed, eg, 4 of 6. So if the report is going to management, they might be wondering what isn't being shown to them. Otherwise, based on my searches for answers to this issue, there isn't a solution from Smartsheet. If I get time, I'll submit a product idea request and post the link back here so everyone can vote. Anyone else is welcome to do it if you get to it before me!

Ok, I've submitted the request. Here's the link - please vote it up to get it on the list to be implemented!

After consolidating empty space (or even manually consolidating empty space so that dashboards aren't as long), refreshing my browser after saving the updated dashboard will remove all of the excess whitespace. From there you can print, copy, etc. and not have to worry about the extra whitespace at the bottom anymore.

    Hi @Paul Newcome ,

I just tried it again on two of my dashboards per your instructions above and I still get one blank page on one dashboard and two blank pages on another when I try to print to pdf. It looks fine on a browser tab, but those blank pages are still there in the pdf.

@mtp105 That's interesting. I've never had a problem with it. I wonder if maybe it is a browser specific thing then? I use Chrome.

@Paul Newcome , I am using Chrome also. I'm wondering if it has to do with having reports in the dashboard that have scroll bars in it. Maybe it's saving some extra space behind the scenes in case we expand those report windows? That's the only thing I can think of.

I also vaguely remember seeing something online somewhere that it has something to do with spooling or however it pulls the info into the pdf printer. Do you know anything about that?
