Sorting is not available in worksheet

I notice that if I am in a worksheet I can only filter the sort function is grayed out or turned off. How can I both filter and sort in a worksheet?

  You need to sort how you want first, then you can use the filter and the sort will remain. I haven't found a way around this so far.
