Is there a way to darken the line numbers on a sheet? I find it hard to read being light grey on white.

Unfortunately, there isn't. Not as far as I know.

To work-around this, I created a RowID column and populated it with the row number (using a formula).
I made the font of that column large enough for me to read easily.
The formula breaks when there are rows being added in the top or middle, or deleted.
Depending on the specific nature of the Sheet (how updated, content sparse or dense, etc...) that can also be accounted for.
The simple version
row 1 value ---------- 1
row 2 formula -------- =[RowID]1 + 1
row 3 and below copy and paste from row 2
