The disappearing checkbox is a great trick!
Here is a recent discussion on making reports have the appearance of conditional formatting of their own.
Another thing we like to do, is create a checkbox column called Is Parent?. The formula is =IF(COUNT(CHILDREN(Task1)) > 0, 1, 0), and this checks a box if the row is a parent, and then we can conditionally format based right on this column, and the column name makes it super easy to read in the conditional formatting menu. We like easy to read
. We can apply header formatting to all parent rows in one shot. This column would typically be hidden. -
