the first screenshot below is picking up the month number the stage is against the project name (primary column)

the second screen shot below is my set up to try do a count function against month numbers

I am failing to get the correct count function for this sheet

im trying to make it dynamic rather than making a new formula per column

can anyone advise?

The way you have this set up, instead of having separate formulas for the columns, you are going to have to use separate formulas for the rows.

You can use something like this though:

=COUNTIFS({S1 Column}, @cell = [Column2]1)

Then in the next row:

=COUNTIFS({S2 Column}, @cell = [Column2]1)

Then do this for each of the rows in [Column2]. Then you would select all of these rows in [Column2] that have formulas and drag-fill it to the right.
