There's a new way to build workflows in Smartsheet: just ask. Open Smart Assist or a connected AI tool using our MCP connectors (such as Claude or ChatGPT) and describe what you want in plain language, like "Send my team an approval request whenever a new row is added." AI now builds the automation for you — a fast, conversational option to create workflows in seconds.
What you can do:
- Create automations just by describing them — from simple alerts to multi-step workflows with approvals, update requests, assignments, and more.
- See what's already running — get a full, plain-language view of any sheet's automations, including who gets notified and when.
- Manage automations conversationally — turn workflows on or off, or remove ones you no longer need, without leaving the conversation.
Why it matters:
Automations are one of the most powerful ways to save time in Smartsheet, but building them has required clicking through menus and knowing where everything lives. Now anyone on your team can automate their work as easily as describing it — so more of your processes run themselves, and your team spends time on the work that matters.
Good to know:
- To modify an existing automation, ask to rebuild it with your changes — the ability to edit existing automations conversationally isn't yet supported.
- Automations are viewed one sheet at a time.
- Notifications go to Smartsheet users and contacts (Slack and webhook actions aren't yet supported).
