UPDATE:
Hi everyone,
Thank you for your feedback. These kinds of changes are never easy. We’ve been reading every comment here and want you to know that we’re listening and that you deserve more clarity and answers.
What you told us
- It’s your preferred experience. For some of you, the desktop app is not just another way to access Smartsheet, but your preferred experience by running in its own window, having dedicated tabs, and feeling faster than using the browser.
- It’s part of how you work. Many of you purposefully rolled it out across your team and use it daily.
- The timing is tough. Thirty days wasn't enough to make such a change.
What’s changing: the date moves to January 6, 2027
We got the timeline wrong. The Desktop App and its browser extension retirement will now be extended to on or after January 6, 2027, instead of October 29. This extends another 90 days out to after the new year. You can continue to use the Desktop App during that time. On that date the app will stop allowing sign-in, and everything will continue to live at app.smartsheet.com. Nothing needs to be migrated.
Where we continue to invest
- Performance. Some of you reported the web experience feeling slower than the desktop app, and that's on us to address. We're committed to improving web app performance, especially for people who keep many large sheets open all day.
- Reliability. Some of you reported that the desktop seemed more reliable, likely in scenarios where the web closed your login session while the desktop remained signed in. We acknowledge there have been more recent incidents, and we are investing in resilience, roll-out, and monitoring to ensure high reliability that is consistent for all of our customers.
- Security. We take security very seriously and make it a priority for how we deliver our services.
- Mobile & Forms. Some of you asked if this is going to affect the mobile app or the ability for users to submit forms. Neither are affected by this change and we continue to prioritize and invest in both of these capabilities - including the recent release of AI Smart Assist on Mobile
- Product Enhancements. We are delivering new capabilities on an almost weekly basis. Focusing on the web app helps us continue to deliver at a high pace and with a consistent experience, including exploration into options for bringing more of the Desktop App experience to the main web app.
Why we’re still planning to retire the desktop app
Many of you asked us to leave the app as is. This is a difficult decision that we genuinely considered very carefully. Here's why we plan to continue to retire the app:
- Security as a top priority. A standard browser experience brings you the highest level of security automatically. Browsers are updated almost continuously by dedicated security teams— no update prompt to click, no local admin rights required, no gaps. A separate desktop application carries additional security surface area to manage. Moving to the browser gives every customer the same best-in-class security posture, automatically.
- Unlocking new capabilities. The desktop app lags in underlying technologies that limit functionality such as copy-pasting 1,000 rows, document builder, attachment previews inside Reports, embedding views in dashboards, consistent WorkApps experience, and more which all work in the browser.
- Consistent and faster innovation. Focusing our investments on a common product surface used by all of our customers allows us to more quickly and consistently deliver the capabilities you’ve asked for, and ensure we are focused and on providing high performance and reliability that is consistent for everyone.
Ways to recreate a desktop‑app‑like experience
Below are official guides for Chrome, Edge, and Firefox for ways to improve window and tab management to get some of the experience of the desktop app. These also benefit from being exactly the same and consistent with the core web app experience.
Note: Google, Microsoft, and Mozilla continue to evolve these capabilities and we're actively looking at opportunities to leverage these even more to bring more of the experience you've asked for in the future.
Tab Management
Pin and group your Smartsheet tabs for quick access and management, enable vertical tabs for easier visual management in your workflows
Install Smartsheet as a web app
Enable a dedicated browser window for Smartsheet that installs on your desktop. Caveat: These are limited to single‑tab windows
Reopen where you left off
Feedback and help
We know this isn't the reversal many of you hoped for. We hope the extra time, the fuller explanation, and the setup guidance make the transition easier. We will continue to listen to and take into consideration your feedback and respond to your questions here.
If your team needs help before January 6, reach out to your account team or Support. If you have specific product feedback or suggestions on how to make the web the best experience for you and your team, send us your feedback - we review all of it.
Original Post:
The Smartsheet Desktop App for Windows and Mac is a downloadable application that gives users a dedicated window for Smartsheet, separate from their browser.
Since its release, we have made enhancements to the Smartsheet product architecture and released several new innovative capabilities in the product. The Desktop App can no longer be updated to support these further enhancements, and it limits our ability to deliver the best experience.
For this reason, on or after October 29, 2026, the Smartsheet Desktop App (Windows and Mac) and its browser extensions will be retired. You can access the Smartsheet application (app.smartsheet.com) directly in your web browser going forward. As we continue to deliver new capabilities and enhancements, the web browser experience provides the best performance, latest features, and strongest security for our customers.
What will happen when the Desktop App goes away?
On or after October 29, the desktop app will no longer allow you to sign in, and any open sessions will be ended. You can continue accessing all of your existing Smartsheet assets and solutions at app.smartsheet.com. Nothing needs to be migrated.
Will I lose any data or work or functionality?
No. The desktop app simply displayed the Smartsheet web app inside a separate window. All of your sheets, dashboards, reports, automations, and settings live in your Smartsheet account and are available exactly as they are today at app.smartsheet.com. All functionality is retained, including ongoing enhancements.
Why not keep the desktop app available?
Maintaining a separate client requires ongoing security, infrastructure, and engineering investment. The desktop app can no longer provide the best experience and continuing to support it pulls resources away from new innovations for our customers. Consolidating on the web app lets us deliver improvements faster and gives every customer the same, most up-to-date experience.
How can I prepare?
Sign in at app.smartsheet.com using your usual credentials or SSO and bookmark it. For quick access, you can also pin the browser tab or create a desktop shortcut. If you have the Smartsheet browser extension installed, you can remove it. You may uninstall the desktop app at any time.
What if I need additional support during the transition?
We are here to help. Please reach out to your account team or reach out to support with any questions.
