Hello Smartsheet System Administrators,
If you provision Smartsheet users through SCIM, there's a new version of our endpoint worth moving to. SCIM v3 is live and running alongside v2 right now, and switching over takes about two minutes.
It fixes the failure modes that generate the bulk of provisioning errors we see – particularly for Microsoft Entra (Azure AD) environments.
What v3 improves
- Role updates via PATCH. Entra sends role updates in a format that doesn't match the SCIM spec. v2 passed them straight through and they failed. v3 corrects them automatically.
- Group member removal. Same story – Entra's removal requests were malformed, v2 rejected them, v3 handles them correctly.
- Complex filters. v2 used simple pattern matching and choked on nested or multi-condition queries. v3 parses them properly.
- Empty search results. v2 threw a "resource not found" error when a search returned nothing. v3 returns an empty result set, which stops identity providers from retrying in a loop.
- Error responses. v3 returns specific status codes – including 409 for conflicts and 403 for permission issues – instead of generic errors. Much faster to diagnose.
- Enterprise attributes. Full support for standard enterprise user attributes out of the box, no extra configuration.
Who this post/message is for
- Anyone running SCIM provisioning into Smartsheet, on any identity provider
- Microsoft Entra (Azure AD) admins especially – the two biggest fixes above are specific to request formats Entra sends
- Okta and OneLogin admins get the filter parsing, error handling, and retry-loop improvements
Before you start
- SCIM provisioning is available on Enterprise plans and requires System Admin permissions. If Directory Integration isn't already enabled on your plan, this update doesn't apply to you – contact Support to enable it first.
What actually changes
One field: your SCIM base URL, from /v2 to /v3.
Your credentials, attribute mappings, group assignments, and sync schedule are untouched. No downtime, no redeployment, no coordination window needed on our end.
Find your region’s URL
Your SCIM base URL depends on which Smartsheet region your account is in. Only the version segment changes – the hostname stays exactly as it is today.
Region | Current (v2) | Updated (v3) [recommended] |
|---|
US | https://scim.smartsheet.com/v2 | https://scim.smartsheet.com/v3 |
EU | https://scim.smartsheet.eu/v2 | https://scim.smartsheet.eu/v3 |
AU | https://scim.smartsheet.au/v2 | https://scim.smartsheet.au/v3 |
Okta
- Sign in to your Okta Admin Console.
- Go to Applications and Resources › Applications and select the Smartsheet SCIM app.
- Open the Provisioning tab, then select Integration from the left panel.
- Click Edit to unlock the settings.
- In the Base URL field, change the URL so it ends in /v3/ instead of /v2/ – for example, https://scim.smartsheet.com/v3/.
- Click Test API Credentials to confirm the connection works.
- Click Save.
Microsoft Entra (Azure AD)
- Sign in to the Microsoft Entra admin center.
- Go to Enterprise applications › All applications and select smartsheet scim.
- Select Provisioning in the left menu, then Connectivity.
- In the Tenant URL field, change the URL so it ends in /v3 instead of /v2 – for example, https://scim.smartsheet.com/v3.
- Select Test connection to confirm it works.
- Select Save at the top.
Menu names reflect current admin console layouts. If yours looks different, the sequence is the same: find the Smartsheet SCIM application, open its provisioning settings, update the URL, test, and save.
After you switch
- Run a test sync or provision a test user to confirm end-to-end operation.
- Watch your provisioning logs for 24 hours. v3 requests are easy to spot – they carry the /v3 path.
If something looks wrong
Change the URL back to /v2. It takes effect immediately and you don't need to contact us first. Nothing to roll back on our side.
What's not changing
SCIM v2 stays supported. This is a recommended update, not a forced migration, and there's no deadline attached.
