I used it all the time, Red, Yellow, Greem and BLUE for when things needed to be tracked, but did not have time dependency.

It may be that your column properties were somehow changed.
I have also used the blue status balls and have had no problems.
To change / check the properties, select the down arrow on the column name and select "Edit Column Properties ..."
You should see something like this. If your blue status ball option is selected (and does not work) or is not available, notify support@smartsheet.com
