Best size for image widget on dashboard?

I'm adding several small image widgets that people shared to the dashboard can use to click and open a webpage or another source...my question is what size/dimension is best used for images? And file type?

Image size is all going to depend on the widget size. Generally speaking, larger images can be shrunk as the widget shrinks, but if the image size is too small, it will only get so big no matter how much you increase the widget size.

File type doesn't make much difference that I have seen other than whether or not it is supported.
