Cell Linking

I have a master sheet that copies cells into 5 other cells, depending on the categorization selected. Is there a way to link cells if they're all going to different destination sheets after they hit the master sheet?

    Hi @carlosreyeskpqw841

I hope you're well and safe!

You could use cross-sheet formulas combined with either a VLOOKUP or INDEX/MATCH structure to connect the sheets, and when you update the source sheet, it will reflect on the destination sheet.

Another option would be to use so-called helper sheets. In short, copy the row to a helper sheet and then use my method described previously to get the values you need to another helper sheet and then copy/move the row from that sheet to the main destination sheet.

To connect them row by row, you'd use an Autonumber Column in the Source sheet and add a so-called helper column to manually add the row id on as many rows as you think you need in the Destination sheet.

    Would that work/help?

    I hope that helps!

Be safe, and have a fantastic week!

  • Hi, @Andrée Starå , revisiting this topic - how would this work if I am trying to carryover a numeric value from the origin sheet to the destination sheet?

A numeric value (4800xxxx) is manually entered in "PO number" field on origin sheet when this number is generated in our procurement system, which does not happen until days after the row is copied into one of the destination sheets.

I find the VLOOKUP function tricky in this situation because the value is numeric, and I have 5 different destination sheets where rows are copied to depending on cost center codes. Plus, I want to automate the linking so when a new row is copied, whatever function I have on the destination sheet is automatically applied to the whole column when the number is entered in the origin sheet.

It would be great to automatically link COLUMNS instead of manually linking individual cells!

Does Smartsheet offer a live session where we could troubleshoot this through Zoom?

    Thank you!
