Workflow triggering from a cross sheet index match formula?

I currently have a smartsheet referencing data from another sheet using the cross sheet Index-Match formula.

When I try to trigger a workflow when this referenced column changes, the workflow is not being triggered. I have tried "Copy a Row" and "Change Cell Value", neither work.

I understand cell linking does not trigger workflows, is this the same with cross sheet referencing as well? What are the workarounds for this?

Yes, it's the same limitation. Try to run the automation on a schedule instead of Immediately.

But how would it be possible to know when the data has changed, as I want the trigger to be a data change?

You can still specify that in the trigger, you would just change the run timing of the trigger -

Hard to diagnose without seeing your entire workflow and trigger, but here's a similar article that may help.

You cannot use a {{Placeholder}} in the subject or body of an automation if it is not triggered "right away".

The "action" in the workflow was to change a cell value, it was not a notification workflow of any sorts
