IF formula not working

I am having issues with what I thought would be a basic formula. I am trying to write a formula that will look at a date in a column and return a yes/no if it before the current date. The formula I have written is:

=IF([column name]@row TODAY(), "yes", "no")

According to what I could find it should work, but I get the "#INVALID OPERATION" error when I try and use it. Anyone able to help?

Apparently it was because my column type was not set to DATE type. So I got my answer lol.
