Why is my auto number column not populating

I create it. It's blank. Add new rows, they are blank. I've tried deleting and recreating and this is nothing but a blank field. I have specified starting number.

Apparently there's just a crazy delay on populating. Shows up in about 90 seconds. Weird, but okay.

You have to hit 'save'. The delay above was due to auto-save.
