When I add a contact to an assigned task - email address appears but no name

When assigning a task to a contact, their email address appears but no name. I am showing as the owner of the project plan. I click on "edit column properties" in the "Assigned To" column and then click on edit contact but the Name field is not allowing me to enter their name. Any
ideas?
