Filters in Smartsheet

I created a filter in Smartsheet and shared the sheet with other users and the filter is not applying to other users smartsheet that I have shared with

That is correct.

Make sure the filter is set as a shared filter. Users will then need to apply the filter when opening the sheet.

So, I just have to set the filter as a shared filter and when I share the sheet (s) I have to make sure they select the shared filter when they open the sheet?

To add to Paul's excellent advice/answer.

Using the share sheet menu, you can set the default view, including the filter. (see below)
