How would you create this data for a dashboard?

I am creating a dashboard that summarizes projects that each have different metrics. I want to present them on a dashboard by each of their characteristics.

For example I want one chart to show projects in progress on one chart and projects completed in another. Can I just do one data sheet and filter it someone like a slicer in excel? Or do I need to do formulas for each metric I want to display using countifs?

I'd recommend using Reports, and then they can be automatically kept up to date.
