Non 'Commenter' 'Viewer' etc able to reply to comment via email response

We have a sheet that we DO NOT want to share access to. But we do want folks to be able to reply to comments. It seems some people are getting the option to reply via email response and some aren't. Neither are shared to the sheet in any way - but they are getting two different looking emails.

1. The email states 'Reply in Smartsheet Or reply to this email to post your comment'
2. The email states 'Go to Smartsheet to reply'

I've searched for this happening and it seems most folks are experiencing one or the other - not both.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hi @Christopher Tirro

If you're using the @mention feature, the person being @mentioned must be shared to a sheet to receive the email notification. (As you create the message you should see a pop-up that asks if you want to share the sheet or not.)

Then in order to use the email reply to generate a comment on the row, the user that receives the email needs to have at minimum Commenter permissions on that sheet.

If you do not want to share the sheet in any way, I would suggest using an Update Request to send a row. If you lock all columns you're sending, so they won't be able to make changes to the row data, but then you can add the Comments field to the message. Hey @Genevieve P.

So this is helpful but one weird thing - folks that are not 'Commenter' have been able to hit 'reply' via the email and it IS showing up in the comments of the sheet. Not sure if that's how it's supposed to function - but it is.

For now I've instructed the team to give folks 'Commenter' access if they'd like to @ someone in the comments.

Note: Just today someone used the @ and was alerted to give the person access so they can see and comment back - so it works; just not sure why in the past we were able to bypass this.
