Maybe a little more info? Are you doing a one-time import or a Data Shuttle import? Are you importing cells that contain "https://something.com" or cells that contain "My Link" and a defined hyperlink for "My Link"?

I am trying to import excel that has specific cells with embedded hyperlinks

Hmm.. I just did a quick test with a sheet that had both "https://google.com" as the text in one cell, and "Google" as the text in a another cell where "Google" was hyperlinked to google.com…similar to what you have above. On a one-time import, both cell came in as hyperlinks.
Note that import will bring in the hyperlinks, but won't attach them to the row. Attachments and hyperlinks are two different things, and you cannot attach something on an import.
You can use the API to automatically create attachments if you have a tool like Bridge available. For example you could use Bridge to read the hyperlink from the import on the row, and create a Link attachments to that URL. Here's the API endpoint for that:

Did you try uploading the excel (.xlsx) file with these hyperlinks to smartsheets? When I import from excel, I only see the text and hyperlinks are gone.

Yes, I did Create…Import from Excel.
