Required Fields in Smartsheet, how would you implement?

I was just thinking about required fields in smartsheet. If you were to create a required field in smartsheet how do you think it should be implemented?

1. I was thinking would you want to have an error pop up when the put data on a sheet but not in the required field after they move off the line?
2. Would you want a submit column type that is greyed out until they enter information in a column?
3. Would you want the data deleted if they didn't complete the required field after a certain amount of time?

Just wanted to think through how would people want to see this done?

I like option 1! The error message could also display when you try to save changes but haven't completed the required field.
