Agile Scrum Sprint - need a functional view ASAP and having hierarchy display issues

I need to quickly transition a team to Agile (2 days) and trying to get Smartsheet set up to support that. I started with the Template Set: Agile Backlog and Sprint Planning. In Board view grouped by Stage and filtered by sprint, I cannot use the 'Nested Child Cards' hierarchy display because everything goes to 'Uncategorized' as a stage. I cannot use the Nested child cards hierarchy display because unlike the Card view, Board view will not show me the Story name so I have no clue which story a task goes with. What am I missing?

I watched the recent Engage recording for Agile where Pia Jacobs demonstrated board view and she had the 'Current Sprint' separate for every screen shot, I'm not sure how she filtered that when it didn't even show as a filter criteria. Again, something I'm missing?

Note, I have been working in Smartsheet more the past several months but not from an Agile Sprint or Kanban capacity so this part is new but I have spent several years in Jira.

  • Correction from my post above and for clarity, in board view grouped by Stage and filtered by sprint:

    1.  I cannot use the 'Nested Child Cards' hierarchy display because everything goes to 'Uncategorized' as a stage.
    2. I cannot use the ‘Separate child cards’ hierarchy display because unlike the Card view, Board view will not show me the Story name so I have no clue which story a task goes with.

    Is there a different solution?

    Hi @Darla Weber!

Some important things I want to mention that might help with your setup:

    1. To use Board view, your sheet needs at least one Dropdown List (single-select), Contact List (single-select), or Symbol column. This setup allows you to organize tasks by grouping cards into different lanes.
    2. Each card’s title pulls from the primary column, and you can display additional fields (up to 14) on each card. Admins can adjust these fields in settings to show the most relevant details for your team.
    3. You can organize tasks in lanes by single-select Dropdown, Contact, or Symbol columns, but note that cards only group by one level. To manage lanes, use the + Add Lane option or rename and delete lanes through the lane menu.

For a deeper dive, the Collaborate in Real Time with Board View article has helpful tips on configuring Board view.

If you can share a screenshot or mock data with similar structure and/or what you are seeing(your actual setup), we’d be glad to take a closer look at your setup and suggest adjustments to help you create your Board View.

    Hope this helps!

    Cheers,
    Isaac.

  • Thanks Isaac. Before beginning I had already gone through the deeper dive you suggested and understood the important things you referenced. The addition of a new formula driven field in grid view for Parent gave me the option to add the parent name onto my tasks in board view.

I have resolved to using Card view as it seems to have more of what I need.
