Formula for capturing one line of text only

Hi all!

I am pulling a report from another system into Smartsheet. One of the columns allows multiple entries in the system that generates the report. If they enter multiples, each appears on a separate line. I just want the top-most entry to pull into a helper column. I am using this formula:

=LEFT(Column@row, FIND(CHAR(10), Column@row))

It's working for cells with multiple entries, but is not pulling the data into my helper column if the original cell only has one entry. How can I correct this so that it pulls the top (most recent) entry into the helper column even if there was only one entry to begin with?

Try this:

=IF(COUNTM(Column@row) > 1, LEFT(……………), Column@row)

@Paul Newcome unfortunately, that formula is not returning anything at all, leaving all the cells in my helper column blank.
