Gantt view - date columns ARE column formulas

Hi, I just want to make sure I am not missing a trick here.
I have a sheet where Start Date and Due Date are based set to column formulas to ensure dates are set for user ease.
If I want to use Gantt - I would either:
a) have to convert these to cell formulas and risk the user overwriting or removing the formula?
or
b) have these as 'guidance columns' and the user enters the info afresh under new 'start date' and 'due dates'.
Is this correct or any other options?
FYI - this user group is new to SS, they don't want to use predecessors /dependencies and I need to keep it super simple for them.

You can convert to cell formulas but then lock the columns and make sure they are set to no higher than editor permissions so that they cannot edit the locked columns.
If they need to manually override, you can give them a set of manual columns and make an update to the formulas you have to basically say that if the manual column is not blank, then use the manual column, otherwise run your existing calc.
