Line Update

We have a sheet that collects data from the user. At times we have to ask for updates or corrections. It would be great if there was a way to request an update and have the user be able to send back information and have it update the same row as the original information.

My intention was to put it on the community board. This is the first one I have done.

No worries this is really easy either manually or through automation - bith asking for an update request.
We use automation a LOT for this type of thing and it can be triggered by a field being filled in or a date being reached. You can customise your email to try and make it idiotproof !!! and restrict the fields they can update to save them seaching the whole record.
So as an example I would create an automation triggered on when a date is reached, customer date 3 days after field Request Date
My condition would be that the response fields you want is blank (otherwise you might keep sending even after they have replied)
My action would be Request and Update
Email addressed to ……either a field with an email address or enter one in yourself e.g. itresponse@abc.co.uk
Subject would be something like "smartsheet name" UPDATE - {{Unique Ref}} Site {{Site}} etc.etc - the fields in curly brackets{{ fill in the contents of that field
then the text of the email I would write some words asking them what I want them to do.
I'd give them the information they need to know (but that I don't want them to change) by detailing it in the curly brackets {{fieldname}}
Then I would choose message and selected fields and just select the fields I want them to update
Now 3 days after the start date at 8am, if the completion date is blank - it will send an email to Sue Rogers (me) asking me to update this record for the fields status, % Complete, Outcome and Completed Date.
Sue Rogers does not need to be shared on the smartsheet as when she receives this email after the text there will be an Open Request button which allows her to enter the data without actually accessing the smarsheet directly
Request an update is our most used function and you can cater for some really very complex process flows - personally I think it is wonderful and with a full audit trail I can see and know what is going on.
Hope this helps as always tough getting your head around your first few tries.
Good luck
Sue
