It would be so helpful to be able to be able to design forms with multiple columns.

Do you mean side-by-side fields in forms? If so, please add your vote to this related idea!
If you mean multi-row (not column), as in one form submission going into multiple rows, the related idea is this one: Multiple Line Entries with one Form Submission
