Editor - Sort Rows greyd out

Hi all,

I’m running into an issue in Smartsheet where, as an Editor, I’m unable to sort rows using the column header menu. I’ve checked for the usual culprits—there are no parent/child relationships in the sheet, no active filters, and no locked rows. Despite this, the sort option still isn’t working.

Has anyone else experienced this? Any ideas or workarounds would be appreciated

If you’re an Editor and “Sort Rows” is disabled from the column header, it’s almost always one of these:

1. You’re not in a sheet grid (you’re in a Report / Dynamic View / published view). Sorting rows from the column header works in a sheet, not the same way in reports/views.
   Workaround: sort in the report settings, or open the underlying sheet.
2. A filter is applied (including shared filters). You can’t sort while any filter is on.
   Fix: Filter menu > turn off/clear all filters.
3. There are locked rows somewhere in the sheet (even if not obvious). Editors can’t sort if the sort would move locked rows.
   Fix: ask the Owner/Admin to unlock rows (or do the sort for you).
4. Dependencies/predecessors are enabled/used. Sorting can be restricted when dependencies are in play.
   Fix: confirm dependencies are off (or no Predecessors are used), then try again.

If none of the above, ask the Owner/Admin to try the same sort (to confirm it’s permission/lock/dependency-related) and share a screenshot of what you see (Sort greyed out vs error message).
