How to Make a Line Graph

Hi all,

I am really struggling here with how to make a line graph charting pricing increasing and decreasing over the year (by month). I have a sheet I'm pulling data from and I tried to make a table and then a report to graph but it's not giving me the correct information on the x and y axis. Here is a pic of the table I created.

I want the x-axis to be the months and the y-axis to be the sums. What am I doing wrong? When I put this into a graph, it charts like this:

I did take the table I created in sheets and I turned it into a report in order to graph it but it is still not working correctly. Any help or advice is much appreciated.

There should be an option to change the type of graph from a column to a line graph. Within that same section of the widget settings there should also be a toggle/button to switch what is used for the axis. also make sure you are including the Months column in the data to be graphed.

Hi, Your chart is acting different because Smartsheet is treating your Months column as text, not real dates, so the graph can’t put them in proper order on the x‑axis. —> Convert the Months column into an actual Date column, or create a helper column with real dates, and build the chart from that. Smartsheet only sorts the x‑axis correctly when the underlying data is true date values, not text like 'January 2026.' Once the Months are real dates, your line graph will plot correctly.

@Yasar_6 That is not quite accurate. If the months are text values, as long as you do not apply any sorting to the source, the chart will have the labels in whatever order is in the source. You are referring to is a sorting issue, but that is not the issue here.

thanks for clarifying. You’re correct that if the Months column is text, the chart will follow the source order as long as no sorting is applied. What I was describing applies when Smartsheet is auto sorting based on date logic, but that’s not necessarily what’s happening in this case..

I knew how to turn it into a line graph, but I was having a hard time changing the x and y-axis. However, I was able to figure it out. Thank you for the help!
