Structure of Sheet

I had someone create a sheet (shown below) and creating the "Months" in a separate column and sort of "child/parent" without having "January" tagged on each line.

From a functionality perspective, I would have rather had a column and choose the Month for each item, versus this "sort of" Child/Parent row.

Would this setup be ok? Testing, the filter wouldn't work if you were trying to Filter for "January" because it isn't tagged on all lines.

Thoughts?

@Susan Swisher Moore Unsure of the intent of the use case, so hard to advise what would be the best layout. I can say that if you want to keep this layout and be able to filter the child rows by month, add another column and use the formula =parent([Content Title]@row) and it will pull the month based on the hierarchy. There's more advanced formulas to do this if it's more complicated, but I think that will work ok based on what you are showing me.

You can then filter based on that additionla column.

@Susan Swisher Moore That formula is designed to look at a date type column (and it looks like you may have accidentally pasted it twice).

I have this formula:

=IF(AND(IFERROR(MONTH([Month Date]@row), 0) = MONTH(TODAY()), IFERROR(YEAR([Month Date]@row), 0) = YEAR(TODAY())), 1, 0)

And that works; however, I had to switch my "month" column to a "date" field type. Not what I want.

@Susan Swisher Moore In regards to your original post, Unless there is a specific need for parent/child rows, I suggest avoiding it.

If you prefer parent/child rows but want the month on every row for filters and whatnot, you can apply this column formula:

=IF(COUNT(CHILDREN([Content Title]@row)) > 0, Month@row, PARENT(Month@row))

@Susan Swisher Moore That is correct. If you want to keep it as text for the month and a separate column for the year, you would need something more like:

=IF(AND(IF(MONTH(TODAY()) = 1, "January", IF(MONTH(TODAY()) = 2, "February", IF(MONTH(TODAY()) = 3, "March", IF(MONTH(TODAY()) = 4, "April", IF(MONTH(TODAY()) = 5, "May", IF(MONTH(TODAY()) = 6, "June", IF(MONTH(TODAY()) = 7, "July", IF(MONTH(TODAY()) = 8, "August", IF(MONTH(TODAY()) = 9, "September", IF(MONTH(TODAY()) = 10, "October", IF(MONTH(TODAY()) = 11, "November", IF(MONTH(TODAY()) = 12, "December")))))))))))) = Month@row, YEAR(TODAY()) = Year@row), 1)
