Is there any chance to update data on the sheet with new xls without importing it once again ?
Have you tried copying and pasting the data? Save a copy of your smartsheet to ensure you don't mess anything up but that should work for you.

Be sure not to copy the headers.

Another option could be to import to a new sheet and then copy or move the rows to the original sheet.
