Help !

I just tested this and it worked in my sheet. After delete the column and saving your sheet, try going to your Home tab, then back to the sheet and add the column back.

Thank you thats what i was doing wrong coming out then going back to it

Hi -
I am having the same problem - I am building a Sheet with several columns, formulas and a web form for data entry. I made the mistake of copying the formulas down to row 60, hit Save and then realized that the numbers auto-generated to row 60 even though there is no actual data in these rows. When I used the web form to test its functionality, it added the new row as row 61.
I then followed the instructions above and Deleted the Auto-Number column, Saved the sheet, Went to Home, Re-opened the Sheet, Re-Added the Auto-Number column, Added a new entry via the web form, which was auto-assigned as row 62.
How do I reset the numbers to 1?
Thank you,
Suzanne Eger

Hello,
Just adding that I am also unable to reset the auto-number column back to 1. Ive followed the instructions with moving to Home Tab and back to the sheet, closing the sheet and re-opening the sheet, and even logging out and reopening the sheet, but it never resets. I would love to use this feature in a template, but we cannot use it with this bug because each new sheet would not start at 1!
Thanks,
Travis

Travis / Suzanne,
I aam able to reset the numbering back to 1 when I recreate the Auto-Number row.
In addition/instead of what is listed here:
https://help.smartsheet.com/articles/1108408-auto-numbering-rows#reset
1. Delete the column.
2. Save and close the sheet
3. Reopen the sheet.
4. Create a new Auto-Number column
5.. Ensure you set the Starting Number to 0 or 1 when setting up your naming convention.
6. Save the sheet.
If you have rows in the sheet, they will auto-update with the new numbering scheme.

Craig,
Thank you! We will try this approach.
Thanks for the follow-up!

Thank you! I think the starting number as 0 or 1 was the thing that helped me.

The original post was so old that I only stumbled upon it by happenstance - my Auto Number reset process had stopped working, so I was searching for why that might be.
Glad I happened to stop by and help Suzanne and Travis.
