Ranking Tasks

I work in the IT Department at a company. Another department assigns tasks to our department for software support for a particular application that they use. We would like for them to rank the tasks that they want us to complete - with numbers - 1 through 25, for example. If they create a new task for our team and assign it as "1", we would like for the remaining tasks to then be renumbered as 2 through 26.  If they create a new task and assign it as "3", we would like for tasks 1 and 2 to keep their assigned numbers and the previous 3 through 26 to get renumbered as 4 through 27.  Could anyone please point me in the right direction for how to make this work?

Thank you for your response. The requests are manually added to a Smartsheet. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Will they be submitted in chronological order in that the newest submission will always be the last entry (or top row)?

I checked with our team and the tasks are manually added to a Smartsheet that is in Grid view. They can be added as a new row at the bottom of the Grid or they can be inserted as a new row in the middle of the sheet. Thank you for your help!
