Why does the count formula not work on date columns?

I simply want to tally how many cells in a column have data, but, if the column is formatted for dates (even with the restriction to only allow dates unchecked), the formula fails with "DATEEXPECTED."

Try adding +”” at the end of the formula.

Thanks for the quick response! Unfortunately, I now get a "unparseable" error, even trying the "+" outside of the formula parentheses as well as inside with and without a comma.
