Row numbers

no such luck!

@Paul Newcome Oh great and wise one I have a question regarding this topic.
I've already used the auto-number column for a prepaid invoice. Now I need to auto-number final invoice. My original helper column was to start at row 1 with a baseline and the use a formula to reference cell above and add 1. That worked perfectly until they automated the rows to move to the archive sheet. :( So now I need a permanent solution to keep running numbers even if the row moves. Any ideas?

@Darla Brown What formula are you currently using?

=helper1+1
But I've decided to go a different route because we couldn't make this work as a formula column. And I needed to remove anything manual.
Instead, I'm using the Group ID (which is a unique ID) to join with a suffix we use as an identifier. =JOIN([PMS ID/Group Code]@row + "GCF") I can make this a formula column and moving the row won't break anything. :)

So I've used both methods. The autonumber column, then using the Match formula works great as a column formula. It fails if you copy rows between sheets because you'll get the "can't copy to that sheet because destination sheet has a column name the same as a system generated column in the source sheet" error. It will work once, then fail.
The countifs method Paul shared works great, but again, if you're constantly moving rows in/out of the sheet you run into a problem.
Anyone have another workaround?
