Is there a way of using QR codes to generate forms without having to download Smartsheet app?
I have been using Smartsheet for almost 2 years to generate post move forms that anyone could generate by scanning a QR code generated from the forms URL link. Now, or recently, it seems Smartsheet app needs to be loaded on the cell phone first before it can access the form. This was not needed before. Did something change? What do I need to make it possible for anyone to use a cell phone to scan a QR code and access the form?

For me, in private/incognito mode, the form showed up in the browser, and then a banner shows that I can open it in the Smartsheet APP.
On my daughters iPhone that doesn't have the app installed, it only showed the form, but that can be a setting on her phone, so the app banner doesn't appear.

Hi @Gavin Kirk
As far as I know it's not needed, but if it's installed it will open the app.
Make sense?
I hope that helps!
Be safe and have a fantastic week!

Hello,
Thank you for responding but you missed the idea of my question. I want it so anyone can open the form without having to download the Smartsheet app first by scanning a QR code. It appears people will need to download the app first which may be a big draw back to making it simple and easy for someone to access the form. Make sense? Thank you for your response!

Happy to help!
No, I didn't miss the idea (I think) 😉
Anyone can open the form even if they don't have the app installed.
On iPhone (and I think Android), too, you can open the camera app and hold the QR code in the viewfinder, and it will pop up the URL, and if you click, it opens the browser with the form loaded.
If you have the Smartsheet App installed, it will open that (at least on iOS).
Make sense?

Hello Andree,
Yes, I know what you are saying and agree it should work this way but now on either an Iphone or an Android it is now prompting to download the Smartsheet app before going to the form. Its quite strange and makes me wonder if Smartsheet had changed something or there is a setting in the Forms that needs to be changed? Thank you for troubleshooting. :-) I am having the same issue but it could be because I once had the Smartsheet app on my phone and even after I deleted it maybe there is some left over code on it someplace? I will try using a 3rd cell phone to see if it keeps happening. Thank you for all your help!

Agree.. I have also noticed that it asks for me to 'open in Smartsheet', but I just want it to open in Safari on my phone.

Yeah, it just seemed to happen a few weeks ago. I have not heard anything back from support and I sent them something last week. Maybe you can send a support ticket too to get this fixed? Thanks!
-
Yes, I put in a support ticket last week but have not gotten a response. Thats interesting that its working for you or coming up in your browser. It is still directing people to download the app first which will be a problem implementing smartsheet at all if 100's of my users need to download an app first. That defeats the whole purpose of having a QR code, doesn't it?
-
Has anyone received a solution for this? I am experiencing this issue also - if a user does not have the Smartsheet app, they are either prompted to download Smartsheet (Android users), log into Smartsheet if they have the app (Android users), or a blank web page opens up (iOs users).
-
NO, I don't think anyone has found a work around with this. I too had been using Smartsheet and QR codes without any issues all of 2018-2019 up until March of 2020 when all of a sudden users whether using an Iphone or a Android device now need to download the Smartsheet app in order to have a form appear. I have not really messed with this since May so I am not sure if its been fixed yet but from your comment it sounds like "No".

Is there an estimated time when this issue will be resolved? The QR code stopped working on all my Smartsheets and I I use them for surveys. People have been unable to access the form because they don't have a Smartsheet account or the app on their phone.
