Automatically populate a cell in a new row

I have a Smartsheet in which my team members add a row and fill in details to request time off. I'd like the Status column of any new row to automatically be set to Pending but I can't seem to find a way to do this. Any advice would be much appreciated, thanks!

Have you considered having your team members use a form instead of having them add rows directly to the sheet? When using a form you can set form fields to populate with a specific answer by choosing a default value and HIDING the field so the user can't see it. (See image below) This could create a really simple option for users to submit for time off
