How to COUNT dates within a column

I am new to Smartsheet and have a sheet that includes a column with dates (ie 12/31/20, 1/16/21, etc) and I am trying to count the total number by month. For example, how many tasks were completed in December 2020, how many tasks are completed in January 2021. I have tried COUNT and COUNTIF and can not get the correct number. Any help is much appreciated.

Try something like this.

=COUNTIFS(Date:Date; IFERROR(YEAR(@cell); 0) = 2021; Date:Date; IFERROR(MONTH(@cell); 0) = 1)
