%Complete Column

I need a formula that will calculate the parent and child rows on a roll-up project plan in the %Complete column based on child rows with %Complete values entered. The parent row should only increase based on the child rows percentages that exist and change as new child rows are added.

    Hi @Cee Johnson

Hope that your year is off to a good start.

You can actually use dependencies to have this automatically rollup to the parent rows. You can get more information by clicking on the link below.

While creating formulas for a sheet that does not have dependencies enabled can be done, there are alot of variables that could impact this from functioning correctly. I would highly suggest using the dependencies for this.

The only consideration is that the % must be completed otherwise the rollup will never reach 100%. This could cause a problem if you are trying to monitor for baselines but there are workarounds for that.

    All the best,

That is a built in feature - make sure you have it turned on.

Put your plan in Gantt view, click on Project Setting (the gear icon below the Share button)

Under Dependency Settings, choose the column that you want to be your "% Complete" column.

The column you choose will now represent the % complete based on the the hierarchy.

Note that it is a weighted value. If you have two sub tasks. One is 5 days and 100% complete and the other is 95 days and 0%, the parent will be 5% complete.

  • @Sandra Guzman Thank you and @David Dolch that part about weighted value is my major painpoint because it's not true. This confuses my audience. Any suggestions.
