Populating Data based on another cell

Is there a way to populate what is recorded in a cell given what is in a different cell? Not a formula with numbers, but data. Example

Column 1 = John Smith, Then Column 2 would automatically populate ABC

Column 1 = Jane Doe, Then Column 2 would automatically populate XZY.

Not sure if there is an automation or a formula that will achieve this.

Yes, you could use a Workflow with the Record a Date action.
