Cannot view PDF as proof?

I am trying to utilize the proofing tool with a PDF document. The document uploads fine, but then I get this screen when I open it up: what is the issue here?

Maybe a problem with your adobe reader install, pending updates or a failed update?

I'm still not sure what the issue is, but it only occurs when I directly upload a document as a proof. If I upload it as an attachment and then convert it to a proof it is working.
