Cross-sheet references

I created a metrics sheet for one project that I am using for another project and did a Save as New and then used Clear Contents to remove the formulas from the sheet so that I could reference the new data. All was going well inputting my new formulas to the new data but now it gives me a popup stating that I've reached the max number of cross-sheet references. This makes no sense as the new data set is half of the old one. Could it be somehow referencing the old data along with the new thinking I'm adding new formulas in addition to the old formulas? Should I have just started the new metrics sheet from scratch?

There are two ways to avoid this in the future:
Save as New or Save as Template: Uncheck the box for "Cell Links and cross-sheet references" under Date & Formatting Options.
Alternatively, export the sheet to Excel, delete the data, import as a new sheet.
