Can't add auto-generated number to a sheet

Anyone know why I can't add an auto-generated number to my sheet. Sheet has been in use awhile. Has a primary column. Now I want to have a unique row id and it won't let me add it? What would prevent this?

Typically this means the autonumber column has already been added. Check to see if the column is hidden or renamed for another use.
