Keeping Formulas When Downloading to Excel

Options

Hello,

I found online that it says when you download a sheet into an Excel sheet that it does not keep the formulas as they are different.

Now just in case, I thought I'd ask: Is there a work around for this at all? Is there absolutely no way to keep your formulas when you transfer them to an Excel?

    Hi Julie

Out of Smartsheet as is, no there is not. However we have developed a number of API solutions for Smartsheet and two of these combined should solve all your needs and then some.

    Smarter Formula Loader details here...

    Smarter Excel Integration details here...

Both are part of the Smarter Mini Control Center range of Api solutions developed by us at SBP. Happy to discuss and provide a demo for you FOC.

When I need to maintain formulas, I use the following workaround:

I create an additional row at the top of the sheet. I enter all of my formulas in this row but I add in an exclamation point to the beginning of each one. This turns the formula into a text string.

If I need the formulas to continue running in Excel (which isn't always possible because of different functions and different syntax for similar functions), I will use the find/replace to swap out all occurrences of != with =.

This will then convert the text strings back to formulas. The same can be done when importing to SS from excel.

It is incredible that they do not have a way to included this as part of the paid subscription. We have to do all the work arounds to get basic things? wow
